Tylenol PM

Never in my wildest dreams would I have though an over the counter drug could almost rob my brother of his life!

We have had quite the week!

A week ago tonight I got the worst call I could have ever possibly gotten. It was my oldest brother Josh saying they had brought my youngest brother Tyler to the hospital because they thought he had taken to many tylenol pm. He told me to hang out for a few minutes and he would let me know an update as soon as he knew something.

I only hoped and PRAYED he would call me back to say everything was going to be ok. However, I found myself in a panic when he called to say things were bad. He came to pick me up while Andre stayed with the kiddos. Upon our arrival to the hospital we were greeted by family telling us they were going to air-evac him to Evansville. I have never felt so helpless in my whole life. First things first... I began calling prayer warriors... and boy oh boy did God here our prayers. Thank you for being willing to pray for my family in the middle of the night.

After knowing Ty was going to Evansville I headed home to get Andre and Ella. My life saving mother-in-law (Lou) came to sleep with Gabe. (She was able to take care of him the next day too.) So off to Evansville not knowing the outcome...

Let me say this also... At washington we were told that Tyler had tylenol and methadone (spell?)in his system. Wow! This really added a real twist to things.

So as we drove to Evansville... my mind was racing of why Tyler had taken to many tylenol and this stupid pill-methadone. All in all I knew was that we were fighting for the life of my brother so at the time these things didn't matter.

We arrived at Evansville and they had Tyler in the ER trying to get him stablilzed. They had to put a breathing tube in for precautions, along with many different iv's, and worst of all they had to keep sedatated. We patiently awaited the Doctors reports.

When my dad came to the waiting room next he had the news we all wanted to hear!!!! There was NO methadone in Ty's system ONLY tylenol. Wow! I knew it! Washington had things screwed up. However, at that point things were still touch and go. They just kept pumping his system out as they were trying to get his numbers down. When I say numbers down I mean liver numbers, kindney numbers, blood-pressure numbers, and etc.

They finally decided to move Tyler to the ICU floor. On this floor they closely monitored him and kept doing all they knew to do. We spent the wee hours of the morning praying for healing.

As for the next couple of days, they are a blur...

Over the course of time they weened him off of the sedation meds and he was able to write notes to us. Then they took his breating tube out..... next his feeding tube...... next his cathader.... as he progressively got better the more they freed him up. He eventually had only an iv in. As they monitored him they checked things like his heart, kidneys, liver, etc. Everything AMAZINGLY came back normal. The only worry at this point was the liver. The liver numbers just weren't coming down like everything else. However, after one more dose of antadote (spell) the liver numbers came down to!

So... Tyler was released on Saturday Amazingly with a healthy report! God is unbeilevable! He has some high blood pressure but as for everything else he is fine.

When Tylers GI Doctor came in to talk with him he let Tyler know he was one lucky dude. He proceeded to say that he has never seen anyone take that many pills and live through it.

12 tylenol pm is leathal and Tyler had built himself up to 20! Now you know what the doc was saying!

As for Tylers story.....
He has the most random sleep cycle... he loves to stay up for the wee hours of the morning doing homework and photography. Then he loves to sleep in until about noon. Well this was mid-term week so he knew he had to sleep. He had taken tylenol before and actually had made a habit of it over the last month-taking as many as 10 thinking he could handle it because it was an OVER the COUNTER drug (- remember 12 is leathal).

So through his tolerance build up he decided to take 20 to make sure and get some sleep that night! All I can say is PRAISE THE LORD that my brother Josh passed him in the hallway and noticed he was acting wierd! Because if he wouldn't have Tyler would have proceeded with his shower and then laid down for the night..... and we all know the outcome would have been different.

God has been so good to us.... We have been thanking him every day for the life of my brother Tyler!

So I am posting all of this
to let you know the real story....
to warn you of over the counter drugs ....
and to thank you all for your prayers.....

Mandi,

I felt so stupid the night that I stopped in at Lou's to see you guys. After you left Lou told me the whole story. Andre had told me some on the phone earlier but I had no idea how totally serious things were. I'm so sorry! Really glad everything turned out ok. OTC meds can be as dangerous as prescriptions if not taken correctly. It's good to remind people of that. Love you guys!!

Mandy-I don't know you personally, but I know your aunt jolene (she's decorating for my wedding) and your parents have taken our pics before. I'm Lacys J. sister. I noticed the title of your post bc I always take Tylenol pm to help me sleep. So I thought I'd check out what you had to say. Wow! I'm so glad that your brother is ok and doing well!!! I can't imagine how scared your family was. We'll be praying for a full and healthy recovery!!!
